Happiness On Sea
Imagine a boutique beach hotel an hour from London, set among rolling dunes with sublime sea views. Add talked-about cuisine, a Bamford spa, yoga on tap and remarkable rooms. Too good to be true? Welcome to The Gallivant, the ultimate self-care staycation.
A Note About The Gallivant
You don’t need to travel long haul for the mood-boost that comes with big skies and mile upon mile of spotless shore. The Gallivant in Camber Sands offers just such a world of wellbeing on home soil. Its mantra – “Happiness is a place” – couldn’t be more apt. From the attention to detail (locally sourced food, cloud-soft beds, dog-friendly rooms) to the attentive staff (they all go the extra mile), you’ll be fed, watered and pampered body and soul. You can picnic or paddle board; attend wellbeing talks or wine tasting sessions; snooze in the snug or salute the sun under the stars – it’s your call. So whether you’re a first-time visitor or a Gallivant member, you’ll leave relaxed, replenished and raring to return.
THE LOCATION
Set on the East Sussex coast, with breathtaking Camber Sands literally on its doorstep, this is a beach-lovers dream destination – hence the complimentary beach bags, towels and wellies, ready and waiting in reception. The hotel has its own ecological coastal garden, too – a dreamy, wildflower-filled haven. Fancy a day away from the dunes? The historic town of Rye, with its quaint cobbled streets and wonky, half-timbered houses, is just eight minutes by car. Lose pleasurable hours exploring the antique shops, castles and churches, and on the way back, drop into one of the local vineyards – if you like natural wine, try super-stylish Tillingham.
THE STYLE
Think British seaside charm meets Hamptons chic, with a touch of Scandi style thrown in. Elegant relaxation is the vibe, so guests must be age 16 or over. Chill out in the comfy snug; grab a stool at the bar for a glass from their list of English wines, and after a day of sun, sea and scrumptious food, enjoy the ultimate indulgence offered by the bedrooms themselves. Soak in a roll-top bath before sinking into a sumptuous bed and sleeping like a baby, ready for your complimentary morning yoga class.
THE FOOD
The Gallivant has a legion of fans, committed to its seasonal cuisine. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the Dining Room, where you’ll enjoy fresh ingredients from the surrounding land and sea – we love Oyster Happy Hour! – and a wine list stocked from English vineyards. Talking of drinks, the bar is open all day and into the night for coffee, tea or something stronger, and there’s a private dining cabin too. Outdoor eating and drinking are a house speciality, from lobster grilled over an open fire on the hotel terrace to a pre-packed hamper for a luxe picnic lunch. Round things off with cocktails in the dunes, watching the sun disappear into the sea.
THE SPA & SELF-CARE
Wellbeing is a Gallivant goal, making a visit to The Open Space a must during your stay. It’s a beautiful, airy studio where yoga and mindfulness workshops are held throughout the day. Book a private class, join one of the timetabled sessions (no previous yoga experience required) or head to the dunes for ‘wild yoga’. Post-workout, wander through the coastal garden to The Beach Hut, home to the hotel spa. Partnered with Bamford Wellness, who provide the trained therapists and heavenly organic products, the spa offers everything from facials to full treatment days, ensuring you’ll virtually float back to your room.
